Volunteers Make a Difference in Lake City!

The vision of Great River Homes, Inc. is for all people with developmental disabilities to have full and abundant lives. That vision can only be accomplished with the help of the community of Lake City and dedicated volunteers who continue to enrich the lives of people in many ways. “Volunteers Plant the Seeds of Kindness” was the theme for this year’s volunteer recognition social held on Sunday, April 18, 2010. Volunteers were recognized for their dedication, kindness and the time they share with others.

 

For over 20 years, volunteer Marian Mahoney has known about the services Great River Homes, Inc. provides to community members with disabilities. Marian states “I continue to be inspired by the commitment of the staff to provide compassionate, personalized care for the individuals receiving services.”  She continues, “Throughout the years, I have been involved on committees and served as a board member, but what I most enjoy is being a one to one volunteer with Linda.” Linda and Marian get together about once a month for a variety of activities including walks, shopping, attending community events, dining out and attending mass together. “Linda is such a welcoming, accepting and grateful person!  I am so fortunate to have her as a friend,” said Marian.  Linda states, “Marian is my friend, I love her.” The relationship is meaningful to both women and their lives are enriched by the time they share together.  

 

A variety of opportunities are available to volunteers with Great River Homes, Inc., including attending church with people, service club membership, church group membership, recreation and leisure activities with people, serving on the agency board of directors, as well as friendship opportunities. Volunteers are able to match their interests and needs with an individual’s needs and interests.
